Did you know that steam cleaning is the preferred carpet cleaning method for most of the major carpet mills? Chances are that your carpet was manufactured by Mohawk or Shaw. These carpet mills may actually void their warranty if another cleaning method is used.

One of the most common distortions of the truth used by carpet cleaners using the so called “dry” cleaning methods is that steam cleaned carpets stay wet for a long time causing health problems.  The truth is that properly performed steam cleaned carpets dry in as little as 2-3 hours.

Speaking of dry carpet cleaning, one of the best known dry cleaners has converted its cleaning method to a water extraction method.  That’s right, Chemdry Carpet Cleaning, now uses truck mounted equipment – I guess they finally had to face the truth.

With steam cleaning, it’s all about the right equipment and the right technique. The best way to steam clean is with powerful truck mounted equipment, not a weak portable unit that must be dragged through your home.

When I talk about the right technique, I’m referring to: pretreatment technique, wand technique, dry stroke technique, and grooming technique.

Proper pretreatment allows a minimum of water to be used.  In the heavy traffic areas, some agitation, helps the traffic cleaning solution suspend dirt and grime for quick and easy removal.  Proper wand stroking techniques also impact the amount of moisture left behind.   Instead of making ‘little pine trees’, moving the wand over the same swatch of carpet, will get almost every drop of the water back out of the carpet along with all of the dirt and grime.

Once the carpet has been cleaned, a drying stroke (using just the powerful truck mounted vacuum) removes almost all of the remaining moisture from the top of the fibers.

Grooming of the carpet pile with a carpet rake ensures that drying through evaporation will completely dry the carpet in a few hours.  The carpet rake causes the fibers to stand straight and sets the pile just like when it left the factory.

What can you do to help the carpet dry even faster? If it’s a humid day, close the doors and windows and run your air conditioning system to remove moisture from the surrounding air; remember that your A/C doesn’t just make air cold, it dehumidifies it too!

Keep traffic off the carpet so the pile is not disturbed. If you absolutely must have your carpets dry in the shortest time frame, alert the technician so he can alter his cleaning technique to promote faster drying.

The easiest way to make sure your carpet is dry in time for that big dinner party is to schedule your cleaning wisely, and leave extra time for preparations.

With all these considerations, there is no reason why your carpet should not be dry in less than two to three hours of the technician leaving your home.

Y’know, money-back guarantees are great. It’s important to know that a company has faith in its own performance. But, even if they give you your money back, you’re still not where you want to be. Let’s say your garage door is installed improperly, and the company apologizes and gives your money back. Well that’s great, but what if it hails?

Why Ask For Proof of Insurance From an Austin Carpet Cleaner?

Austin carpet cleaners working for commercial properties are required to carry very high insurance coverages against potential losses. We carry such coverage, and extend it to your home when we come to clean your carpet.

Accidents happen. If they didn’t, insurance probably wouldn’t be necessary.

One form of insurance we purchase is worker’s compensation insurance. This is important to you as a homeowner because in most instances the limits of liability are set by the state government. If an employee of your carpet cleaner is injured on your property and he isn’t covered by worker’s compensation insurance, your homeowner’s insurance may be at risk. That is why we make sure to comply with the worker’s comp regulations.

Liability insurance is another form of coverage you should verify before allowing any contractor to perform work on your property.

I’ll share a story with you to illustrate the importance of liability insurance. A single mother had a new air conditioning system installed and was told that her insulation was inadequate. She hired an insulation installation firm to come do the work. Improperly installed insulation caused a slow leak to develop that resulted in mold growth. The mother claimed that the mold caused respiratory problems in her children, and severe skin problems in her dogs which lead to their premature death. Whether her claim was valid or not, the primary reason that a lawyer would take her case is that the insulation contractor had a liability insurance policy. In other words, there had to be enough money to collect if the lawyers built a successful claim.

We strive to avoid accidents, and conduct safety programs for our staff, but if we are involved in an accident on your property, you can rest easy knowing that we are fully insured for your protection.

What differentiates one Austin carpet cleaning company from another?

There are many aspects to a business, anybody who has ever managed or owned a small business can attest to that. What distinguishes one company from another is what creates value for one over another. What distinguishes one carpet cleaning company from another is the level of service and the amount of value that the customer receives. Consider the following points to help you make an educated decision about which company you should hire.

You want to do business with the people who have ethical business standards, right? But how can you know if they really are who they say they are? If your carpet cleaner has committed himself to ethical business practices, he’ll probably advertise this. He has agreed to follow a code of ethical guidelines when doing business. This means that they won’t use bait-and-switch tactics to coerce high fees from you. They will give you a fair price up front, and won’t be afraid to tell you if a service cannot be priced over the phone. Some services must be seen before an accurate quote can be given. Bait-and-switchers will tell you an unbelievably low price on the phone, and then frighten you into paying higher-than-normal fees when they arrive. An ethical cleaner will educate you in the methods and products we use to get your carpet cleaned, before you agree to pay anything.

What sorts of services are offered? At Service Depot, we use the hot water extraction method, commonly known as steam cleaning, because we believe that it is the deepest and most thorough clean available. Most large carpet manufacturers agree, in fact, some will void your warranty if another method is used. We also use green products, with established safety records, when cleaning your home. You can rest assured that our products will not harm your pets or your children. These products are currently more expensive, but equally as effective, as their toxic counterparts. As more cleaners provide, and more customers demand, green products, these costs will come down.

How do they take care of their people? This involves how they are paid, how much training and support they receive, the condition of their equipment, and whether they are insured. Training and equipment is important to the customer to ensure that they receive the highest quality clean. Adequate pay is important to the technician for obvious reasons, but also to us because we like to have happy workers. Insurance is important to everyone involved in the case of an accident.

Do they guarantee their work? We stand behind our work 200%. If you’re not pleased, we’ll clean it again.  If you’re still not pleased, we’ll refund your money, and hire another carpet cleaner at our cost.

How long have they been in business and what associations do they belong to? Guarantees are great, except when the company has disappeared. Let business longevity be one of the many signs of a reputable business. We’ve been cleaning carpets in the Austin area since 1998 and have been a standing member of these establishments, along with others.

Can you speak with a real live person? Customer service is important to us. You can call us on the phone and speak with a real live person with your questions and comments. Some cleaners have recordings or strictly online systems. We offer a number of ordering and communication methods, including email, fax, text, and online form, but we’re always here to listen if you need us!

Are over-the-counter spot treatments effective in cleaning my carpets?

May 24th, 2010

The answer to this question depends on the type of stain or spot you are trying to clean, and how closely you follow the product instructions. Most are effective, as long as they are properly rinsed away.

What I mean by this is that most of these spot cleaners leave a residue as they dry. If they are not rinsed, the residue will simply remain on your carpet fibers. Whenever water (or liquid containing water) is applied to the area containing the residue, it will be reactivated, and could potentially degrade your carpet more each time. One of the most common mistakes made with these over-the-counter cleaners is overuse. The user simply puts so much on their carpet that it cannot be rinsed out. By the time a professional is called, there may be extensive work to get the excessive residue out of the carpet. If the residue is left in the carpet, it will act like a magnet, attracting dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants from the bottoms of your shoes.

But my carpets smell better! Most carpet spot cleaners contain a fragrance, which masks the smell of the carpet fibers. Usually, the user sprays a fragrance in order to get rid of an offending odor. What they often don’t realize is that any product with a fragrance is a form of air pollution.

“Fresh” doesn’t have a smell. If you want to get rid of an odor, you must remove the source of it, which usually involves professional equipment to clean deeply and thoroughly. Any product which smells “fresh,” is a perfume.

A simple internet search can return thousands of tutorials and home remedies for removing spots and stains of various types from carpets. Plenty of people have had success with these products, and you may too. But, we highly recommend using caution when applying these products to your carpet. And we also suggest that you strongly consider calling a professional, it may save you money in the long run.

Carpet Steam Cleaning in Austin? Worried About Reappearing Stains?

First, let’s start by defining some terminology. A stain is wBoy in mudhat is left over after the spot that created it has been removed and cleaned. If red mud is tracked on a carpet, for example, the spot can be removed and cleaned. Once the dirt or mud has been cleaned the red color left behind is the stain. While a spot is a physical substance which rest upon a carpet, a stain is a chemical reaction that the substance has with the carpet and this stain cannot be removed with normal cleaning. After the spot has been cleaned, a professional cleaner can determine the best method and products for removing the stain.

When you have a spot (which can be cleaned), the offending substance is affected by gravity. Gravity pulls the soiling substance to the bottom of the carpet, and sometimes into the pad. When a professional Austin carpet cleaner comes into your home and cleans this spot using the hot water extraction method, commonly known as “steam cleaning,” he uses hot water to remove the substance from the surface. If he uses the right truck mounted equipment with powerful vacuum, he will also be able to remove up to 90% of the water he used to do the cleaning.

If a carpet has not been properly maintained through regular vacuuming and cleaning, excessive soiling may accumulate under the carpet backing and padding.

So let’s assume that the spot is gone and the carpet looks great, right? Once in a while, as the remaining 10% of the cleaning water evaporates into the air, it can pull the spot back to the surface of the carpet through capillary action, also referred to as wicking. Once the leftover water has dried completely, the remaining soiling substance can reappear on the carpet as a spot.

Other than the inconvenience, this is not a bad thing! This natural phenomenon allows the hidden dirt and oil at the bottom of your carpet to be removed by a quick touch up or spot clean without the need to pull up the carpet. However, if the soiling is extensive, it may be better to clean the top and bottom of your carpet, along with the pad and the floor beneath.

Chem-Dry

Now, the so called “dry” or low-moisture carpet cleaning methods such as Chem-Dry, claim that their method prevents wicking. It may be true that there is a lower risk of wicking since this method uses less water, but how do they remove the deep dirt? In truth, these methods can, at best, only remove a portion of the dirt on the surface of the carpet.  And I don’t know about your, but I don’t want more chemicals added to our already polluted indoor environment?

But don’t take our word for it. Chances are that your carpet was manufactured by one of the largest mills in the world. Shaw, Mohawk and other well known manufacturers recommend “steam cleaning” and may void their warranty if others methods are used.

What Pet Owners Should Know About Treating Pet Odors?

While some treatment methods can work for more than one odor, every odor has a different ideal treatment. Use the right tool for the job. Regardless of the odor involved, the only way to truly remove an odor is to remove the source.

THERMAL FOGGING / HOT FOGGER

Smoke odors can be treated by thermal fogging or an ozone generator. Food and body odors can be treated by thermal fogging. These odors permeate porous surfaces and cannot be cleaned by traditional measures. A hot fogger super-heats a counteractant agent into a dense fog which penetrates the same porous surfaces that harbor the source of the odors.

Ozone is a highly misused technology due to years of false claims by manufacturers and distributors. If used improperly Ozone is potentially dangerous and could be fatal to humans and animals.

Pet odors can be tricky. One method for cleaning pet urine odors is to use an enzyme, a living organism, to “eat” the odor causing micro-organisms.

If conditions are right for this treatment, the solution can be quick and easy. If the source of the odor is urine, and it has been in place for a long period of time, the carpet padding and subfloor may be contaminated. In this case, the floor may need to be treated or replaced and the padding replaced before the odor in the carpet can be treated.

Pet Stains

If left untreated for a long period of time, urine may leave a pet stain.  This stain can normally be treated with a commercial urine stain remover.  If the stain cannot be removed, the discolored area may need to be re-dyed or even patched.

Sometimes, pets can create odors in areas other than the carpet, such as the baseboards or walls. If the odor source is removed from the carpet, an odor-specific sealer can be used to contain the odor-causing molecules.

If you are unsure how serious your problem is, many experts and professionals in your area may be willing to perform a free estimate or consultation. Take advantage of this to get a second opinion on your situation.
